Match Play - Golf Rule - Number 2

In this article we will talk about rule number two of the book Rules of Golf.

Reglas de Golf - Match Play - #2

The Rules of Golf (R & A) in the second rule determines the type of game called "match play", which in essence is a game of golf heads up, one against one, and wins the hole the player or side that fewer strokes make playing the hole. The player who wins the most holes during the stipulated round of golf, wins the match. If tied at end of hole 18, the players must continue playing until the game set in the hole 19, 20, 21 and respectively.

I would like to stress once again that the Rules of Golf are crystal clear defining this type of game and many of the customs that you have to play or play the same way, come from this rule 2, the rule book says :

Match Play

General 2-1

A match consists of one side playing against another over a stipulated round, unless the Committee otherwise.

In match play the game is played by holes.

Unless you have the rules otherwise, a hole is won by the side that holes its ball in fewer strokes. In a handicap match the lower net score wins the hole.

The state of the match is expressed by the terms: so many "holes up" or "equal," and many holes "to play."

A side is "asleep" when many holes up as missing to play.

Tied 2-2 Hole

A hole is halved if each side holes out in the same number of strokes.

When a player has holed out and his opponent is a blow to the tie, if you then the player incurs a penalty, the hole is halved.

Match Winner 2-3

A match is won when one side has a number of holes greater advantage to remaining to play.

If there is a tie, the Committee may extend the stipulated round by as many holes as necessary for a match to be won.

2-4 Concession of Next Stroke, Hole or Match

A player may concede a match at any time before starting or concluding the match.

A player may concede a hole at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that hole.

A player may concede the opposite the next stroke at any time provided the opponent's ball is stationary. Contrast is considered to have holed out with his next stroke and the ball may be removed by either side.

A grant may not be refused or revoked.

2-5 Doubt as to Procedure; Disputes and Claims

In match play, if there is any doubt or dispute between the players, a player can make a claim. If a duly authorized representative of this Committee is not made within a reasonable time, players must continue the match without delay.

The Committee may consider a claim only if the player puts his hand notify (i) who is raising a claim, (ii) on the events and (iii) who wants a ruling. The claim must be made before any player in the match plays from the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the match, before all players in the match leave the putting green.

A later claim may not be considered by the Committee unless the same is based on facts previously unknown to the player who raises the claim and an opponent that he has given wrong information (Rules 6-2a and 9).

Once the result of the match has been officially announced, the Committee can not consider a subsequent claim unless it is satisfied that the opponent knew he was giving wrong information.

2-6 General Penalty

In match play the penalty for violation of a rule is loss of hole except it is otherwise provided.

Interestingly, the wisdom of the regulation of this type of game, in the sense that is both challenging and fun to play a Match Play in Golf. I notice also important to note that in this game in almost all cases, if committed an infraction of the rules the punishment is loss of hole directly.

A custom that I find in the rules is that the loser of the match, have to score in the game schedule or results in the result of match play, and how serious note:

- The number of holes won more holes to play, eg 2 holes up to 1 per play, and would be written 2 / 1.

- It is true that too many people can write "2 UP", the English word above, two holes up.

Under this type of play is very important departure times of the players, in the presence of Match Play players on the tee should be strictly on time, under penalty of losing the match by Walk Over (WO), is of the word "Quit", which means "abandon" in Castilian.
